Transfer station fire likely to put hazardous material storage under increased scrutiny again

Netregs guidance amended thanks to Remsol

Guidance posted on the Environment Agency's Netregs website that gave contradictory and confusing advice on how to code finished pharmaceutical waste using the European Waste Catalogue (EWC) has been removed and replaced in response to observations made by Remsol.

The earlier guidance gave the impression that pharmaceutical rejects from a manufacturing environment could be correctly coded to 20 01 32 as well as the more widely accepted 18 01 09 code.

Remsol pointed out this apparent discrepancy during a wider discussion about the correct coding, description and subsequent disposal of pharmaceutical wastes, and the Agency was quick to confirm that the 20 01 32 code should not be used to describe wastes from a manufacturing setting.

The guidance has now been amended and sets out in more detail which EWC codes are most appropriate for various wastes, making the distinction between manufacturing rejects and patient returns to pharmacies, and can be found by following the link: http://www.netregs.gov.uk/netregs/businesses/93331.aspx
