Remsol set to host "good practice" seminar for pharmaceutical waste management in response to Environment Agency request

Significant recycling boost for Lancashire chemical company

As part of its fully outsourced waste management agreement with a local chemical firm, Remsol has helped to boost site recycling levels from an average of 67% to a whopping 85%

With a total recycling and recovery rate that was already significantly above the industry norm, achieving any increase was always going to be challenging.

But the innovative thinking that characterises Remsol's approach to waste management saw one of the sites' largest wastestreams being recovered instead of being landfilled.

On four occassions, overall recycling and recovery rates exceeded 90%, with 97% of all waste arising on the site being recovered or recycled in May 2009.

"This represents an impressive win that both Remsol and the clients' own staff should be justly proud of," says Contract Support Officer at Remsol, Amanda Thresh, who has day-to-day responsibility for managing the contract and client interface.

Diverting over 1,200 tonnes of waste that would historically have been mixed with absorbent solids at a physico-chemical treatment plant before being sent for final landfill contributed to this success.

"After recognising early on that the sites' biggest wastestream had an inherent calorific value, the Remsol team set about establishing it as a candidate for inclusion in cement kiln fuel and, despite the reduction in processing capacity caused by the economic downturn and reduced demand for cement products, we have still managed to maximise recovery and recycling levels by exploiting the Secondary Liquid Fuel market," concludes Amanda.

Remsol and the client are so happy with this improvement that they are considering whether to jointly enter the achievement in the forthcoming edie.net environmental awards.
